My name is Gorka Hierro and I am a sculptor, deeply in love with wood carving.

My connection and love for this noble material go back to my childhood. My father, a carpenter by profession, used to take me every week on foot from Basauri to Etxebarri to buy large wooden boards of different kinds, which we later carried back home. I can still remember that feeling of well-being and joy, my inevitable attraction and respect for this noble natural element that nature offers us through trees.

I feel immense pleasure when working with wood. It begins with an intention, an idea that arises within me. I gradually shape it, and little by little it seems to acquire a soul of its own. Guided by inspiration, I carve, wear down and polish the material until I finally achieve a specific form, whether it represents a concrete object or an abstract feeling.

My training in this field dates back to my youth and vocational studies, when I completed a C.I.P. in Carpentry and Cabinetmaking. I then spent two years doing practical training in a carpentry and cabinetmaking workshop, later complementing this experience with a course in kitchen furniture manufacturing. For a time I left the wood sector to work in the industrial field, where I trained in areas I considered useful and interesting, such as “Quality in the Manufacturing Process”, taught by Mondragon University.

Like anyone else, I continued along my path, working, studying and developing projects parallel to my own personal evolution.

In 2017 something within me shifted. It felt like the right moment, and I felt the need to return once again to wood carving — to what truly moves and inspires me.

I then enrolled in a specialized three-year course in Wood Carving at the School of Arts and Crafts, where I developed valuable and rewarding skills in both machining and carving techniques. After this period, I left the industrial field entirely and devoted myself fully to daily work in carpentry workshops. The years passed and continued to enrich my experience.

During this period I went through a personal and professional experience that naturally led me to explore the language of sculpture.

At first I worked within figurative sculpture. Later, I decided to focus without hesitation on producing abstract and contemporary sculptures and carvings, using wood from sustainable forests or recycled wood, finished with ecological products.

Through my work and art — sculpture — I seek to create unique visual and tactile effects.

I explore the beauty of textures, reliefs and empty space, giving prominence to the natural grain found in different woods. I highlight these features through compositions of regular and irregular lines, creating forms that invite the viewer to sharpen their senses.
